Daichi Kamiyama studied cellular biology and neuroscience for his Ph.D. at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. As a researcher in Miami, he engineered a fluorescent protein-based sensor to study brain development in fruit flies. Later, at the University of California San Francisco, Kamiyama started studying how nerve cells grow in fruit flies using high-powered microscopes. Now, at the University of Georgia, where he is an associate professor, Kamiyama is working on understanding how nerve cells develop and keep their function, focusing on the parts of the cells called axons, dendrites, and synapses.
